"The real truth is that we are all space aliens. We’re on a strange planet, flying out through the galaxy…. There’s nothing human about any of us. We’re all pretty weird."

— Luke, age 7

"Space really does have aliens. But we’ll never meet them. They just fly and fly and fly. Sometimes they fly straight and sometimes they fly in circles. But they don’t know we’re here so they will never come to visit. They’re all green. Their whole bodies are green. Not purple, or white, or orange. Green. Except their eyes. Their eyes are blue… hmmm… I’m not sure. Hmm. That’s the only thing about space I don’t know yet: the color of aliens’ eyes."

— Beth, age 3

At the request of my kids, I drew Dora the Explorer as a space robot.

Robots
[Scene: Luke, age 6, is looking at a toy display]
Luke: "You know what's weird? They always show robots in cities. They're stomping around the streets and buildings. Or they're in space. They never show robots in other places."
Me: "Hmm. I guess you don't see too many pictures of robots on farms, for example."
Luke: "Robots on farms? That just sounds weird!"
iPhones in space
[Scene: Luke, age 6, after watching the news]
Luke: “Dad, I saw on the news where this guy sent his iPhone into space and took really cool video of the earth.”
Me: “Yeah, that was cool.”
Luke: “Can we do that with /your/ iPhone?”
Me: “No.”
