Beth: [age 4] "I think you're trying to trick me."
Luke: [age 8] "Me? Why would I try to trick you?"
Beth: "Because you're Luke."
Luke: "I'm your brother! I would never try to trick you."
Beth: "Oh yes you would."
Luke: "Have I ever tried to trick you before?"
Beth: "Yes. A lot."
Luke: "I can't believe you are telling me this. This really hurts my feelings."
Beth: "I'm just telling the truth."
Luke: "I can't believe you don't trust me. Mom, did your brother ever try to trick you when you were kids?"
Mom: "Yes, all the time."
Luke: "YOU ARE NOT HELPING."
Beth: "You're a tricky one, mister!"
[Scene: I overhear Luke, age 8, in the next room talking with his sister Beth, age 4]
Luke: "Everybody on Earth is crazy."
Beth: "Me and you are not crazy."
Luke: "Yes we are. Everybody is."
Beth: "Are snakes crazy?"
Luke: "Are snakes people? No. Only people are crazy."
Beth: "What about rabbits or chickens?"
Luke: "Maybe a little."
Beth: "Well, I'm not crazy."
Luke: "Yes you are. So am I. And especially Dad."
Beth: "Oh yeah, he's really crazy."
[Scene: Luke, age 8, is sitting next to Beth, age 4, who is wearing a bandage around the wrist she sprained a day earlier]
Luke: "I guess I should take it easy on you, because you hurt your hand."
Beth: "I didn't hurt MY FIGHTING HAND!" [punches Luke in the stomach with her good hand]
"BE CALM! I am only here to destroy you utterly. That is all."

Thanksgiving and the Sky Song
Beth: [age 4] "For Thanksgiving, we're going to put on a show."
Me: "We are?"
Beth: "Yes! We're going to build a stage outside. A real stage with real curtains. Then the curtains will open and Luke will sing a song while I dance."
Me: "I had no idea. What song is he going to sing?"
Beth: "It's a new song. We have to write it. Here is a piece of paper and a pencil. You start writing."
Me: "But what should it be about?"
Beth: "It should be about the sky. Call it 'The Sky Song.'"
Me: [writes that down] "Okay. So, what are the words?"
Beth: "Here is what I like about the sky..."
---
I like the sun in the sky.
I like the clouds in the sky.
I like the stars in the sky.
I like the moon in the sky.
I like how the sun and the moon are bright.
I like how the sun and the moon are bright.
I like the birds flying in the sky,
Especially the birds flying in the sky,
Because they can fly whenever they want to.
I don't like rain that makes us all soaked and yucky.
But I do like snow that I can pack into icepacks and throw.
---
Beth: "Now, you go write the song. Don't come back until you are done!"
United Supernova!
Me: "What are you doing?"
Luke: [age 8] "I'm giving Beth pushes on the swing and telling her all the different levels of swinging."
Me: "Different levels of swinging?"
Luke: "Yeah, you know, names for how high you are swinging. Like different levels."
Me: "I didn't know there were levels. What are they?"
Luke: "The first one is Knight. Then there's Baron. Then there's Princess. Then Princess Supernova, Queen, Queen Supernova, King, King Supernova, and finally United and United Supernova."
Me: "United Supernova?"
Luke: "Yeah, United is all the others combined together -- that's the highest level of all, except Supernova makes it even higher. United Supernova!"
