Things that Beth, my 4-year-old, said while we were walking through the woods:

  • “Hold this stick. Don’t break it. It’s a riddle stick. Inside this stick are all the answers to all the riddles in the whole universe.”
  • “Quick, hide behind this tree. The sunbeams are trying to find us because they think I was trying to steal their sparkles.”
  • “Do you think an animal lives in this hole? I don’t know. I think the only way to find out is to make a magic wand that can make us small enough to walk inside like it was a big cave. Then we could have tea with whoever lives in this hole.”

Shadows
Beth: [age 3, while outdoors] "Look at my shadow, Daddy!"
Me: "Wow. That's a big shadow."
Beth: "Did you know I am as big as my shadow?"
Me: "You are?"
Beth: "Yes! Did you know I /am/ my shadow? Did you know my shadow is the real me and my body is the real shadow?"
Me: "That sounds interesting. What does it mean?"
Beth: "It means: stop stepping on me, I'm trying to walk here."
I turned the dog into a girl
Beth: [age 3] "Daddy, look at the dog."
Me: "What about him?"
Beth: "I put sparkles all over."
Me: [looks] "Hmm. I do see a few sparkles on him."
Beth: "Not 'him', Daddy. I turned the dog into a girl."
Me: "Really? How did you do that?"
Beth: "I'm a Life Princess. I can do things like that."
Me: "I don't know if the dog really appreciates being turned into a girl."
Beth: "I made him fly up into the sky too."
Me: "Wow, really? When did you do that?"
Beth: "When I was a Air Princess. I can change what kind of princess I am."
Me: "So you can make the dog fly?"
Beth: "Yes. I just -- whooosh -- made him rise up in the air. And then he put his paws out and flew around. And then -- whoosh -- I made him rise back down."
Me: "'Him'? I thought you turned him into a girl."
Beth: "I just changed him back."
