It’s a sunny but cool day off with the kids. A good day for baking and hiking. The kids couldn’t agree between making monkey bread or making rice pudding, so we’re doing both. After that, it’s time for a hike with the dog.

Do you have the day off with your kids? What are you doing?

Chrysalis Ginger
[Scene: Beth, age 3, has run into my home office with something in her hand]
Beth: "Here, eat this."
Me: "What? What is it?"
Beth: "Just suck on it."
Me: "This looks like candy. Is it candy?"
Beth: "It's chrysalis ginger. No, no, not chrysalis. I mean CRYS-TAL-IZED. It's good."
Me: [takes a bite] "Mmm, that is good. Did Mom give it to you?"
Beth: "Yes! Mom is baking. The ginger is really spicy but I LIKE IT A LOT!!!"
Stirbatch the Superhero
[Scene: Luke, age 5, is wearing a cape]
Luke: "Dad, my superhero name is Stirbatch."
Me: "Stirbatch?"
Luke: "Yeah."
Me: "What kind of superpower does Stirbatch have?"
Luke: "I turn bad guys into cookie dough. Then you can bake them and have cookies."
Me: "Cookies? What kind, chocolate chip?"
Luke: "All kinds. Different bad guys turn into different cookie dough, obviously."
