"I don’t know what to do. Half my mind is telling me I’m going to have a bad day. The other half of my mind is telling me I’m going to have a good day. I think I’m just going to go with the good day half!"

— Luke, age 8, on his way to the school bus

"Everyone has some stubborn when they are born. When you get bigger, so does your stubborn. And when you become a teenager, your stubborn goes BAZASTERS!"

— Luke, age 8, hopefully not prophesying

This will not end well
Me: "Lose the attitude, alright? You've been fresh with me ever since we started this, and if you don't change your attitude, this will not end well for you."
Luke: [age 8, with snark] "It might not end well, but wow, it's sure starting really great!"
"She’s just so bossy! She always has an answer for everything, and it’s all about her. I think sometimes her fan is blowing too hard!"

— Luke, age 7

One of those moments

It would take a whole page to explain the backstory, but suffice it to say that in the midst of an argument with my 7-year-old, it suddenly became crystal clear to me that even though he was wrong, I would save both of us a helluva lot of grief if I just sat down and did something his way instead of mine.  The alternative was to let him stubbornly continue to argue with me (or perhaps, let me stubbornly continue to argue with him) while he (and I) spiraled into a lot of anger and trouble that would likely ruin the rest of our day.  It delayed me twenty minutes on a project that I’ll have to finish up later, and he was truly wrong about the subject of the argument, but in the grand balance of things I think it was better for me to swallow some stubborness of my own in order to seek peace and set an example.

As my kids get older, I have more and more moments like this. Do you ever have them?

Girl power
[Scene: Beth, age 3, is sitting on the toilet]
Beth: "Daddy, today I am going to wipe all by myself!"
Me: "Really? You think you can do it?"
Beth: "Oh yes. I have GIRL POWER!!!"
